In the months following the 2016 presidential election, there has been a slow drip, drip, drip of information on foreign meddling in our elections. And much of the recent focus has centered around Russia’s use of paid political ads on Facebook and Twitter to influence public opinion and fan the flames of division.
Now―in a rarely seen bipartisan fashion―Congress is taking action.
Senators Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), Mark Warner (D-VA) and John McCain (R-AZ) have introduced the Honest Ads Act―legislation that addresses the national security threat posed by foreign interference in U.S. elections. A companion, bipartisan bill has been introduced in the House by Representatives Derek Kilmer (D-WA) and Mike Coffman (R-CO).
Become a citizen co-sponsor of the Honest Ads Act and demand immediate hearings in Congress on protecting our political system from foreign interference.
To: All Members of Congress
Our 20th century laws are out of date and overmatched by the 21st century reality of political campaigns. In the wake of the 2016 elections, we continue to learn more information about how Russian agents interfered through the use of targeted Facebook and Twitter paid political ads. We demand that Congress act to protect our democracy through immediate hearings and by passing the bipartisan the Honest Ads Act.
